Guide to Key ICT/Software Resources for Peace and Development ...

Dear Colleagues

One of the main goals of this site is to help practitioners, students and scholars network, connect and share best resources. As I am often working in different contexts (and countries) and across multiple computers, I wanted to share some of the free software/it services that I have found incredibly useful to help me stay connected, up-to-date and informed. This is not specifically an endorsement of any particular product/company (and I only want to list free services here) but other members might find some of these resources useful in your work and research.

I would also highly recommend a blog site ICT for Peacebuilding that specifically explores the role of Information and Communication Technology in contributing to peacebuilding.

Here are some top resources (in no particular order). I would encourage others to suggest additional tips (before downloading any resource on your computer, I highly recommend ensuring the download is safe, spyware and virus free and also appropriate for your computer operating system).

1) Twitter - Twitter is a service for individuals and organizations to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages. People write short updates, often called "tweets" of 140 characters or fewer. These messages are posted to your profile or your blog, sent to your followers, and are searchable on Twitter search. Please also see the PCDN Guide to Tweeting for Peace and Social Change as well as PCDN on Twitter? at http://twitter.com/pcdnetwork

2) SKYPE - This is a wonderful service that you can download in a few minutes. Skype allows you to call, chat or do conduct a videoconference to any other computer in the world (for free) that also has skype. There are also some features that you can pay for (such as calling from a computer to a phone or setting up voicemail).

3) QuipQuip is a modern word processor that enables you to create beautiful documents on any device, including the iPad, iPhone, and the desktop. It combines documents and messages into a single chat-like ?thread? of updates ? making collaboration easy.

4) Download.Com - This is a site sponsored by the technology site CNET and a wonderful resource to learn about various programs (anti-virus, firewalls, system tools, educational programs, etc.) The site rates programs and also has user and editorial reviews. Many of the programs here are available for free.

5)OPEN OFFICE OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute. This is a great alternative to some office programs that cost money.

6)?LibreOffice - LibreOffice is the power-packed free, libre and open source personal productivity suite for Windows, Macintosh and GNU/Linux, that gives you six feature-rich applications for all your document production and data processing needs: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base.

7) FIREFOX This is an open source Internet Browser (and they have Thunderbird a very useful e-mail program). I have found Firefox to be much more flexible, fast and user friendly than many of the commercially available programs (and they are always doing updates).

8) NING This site is hosted on a Ning Platform. Ning is the only online service where you can create, customize, and share your own Social Network for in seconds.? Of course please consider creating a sub-group on this site as it will be way to attract more users and share experiences. Ning now charges for the platform.

9) CF Sites? is a simple, free way to create a website for a non-profit or other good cause. Within minutes, you can create a website with a custom look and have it live on the Internet.

10) NETSQUARED - Our mission is to jumpstart the leading edge of online technological change -- and to help nonprofits use that edge to change the world. Netsquared is a venue for learning skills, sharing experiences and developing expertise.

11) Music and Networking Sites - There are several sites I personally enjoy using that provide access to online streamable music from all over the world. Through using the sites you can learn about many different genres of music and listen to new artists, network with other listeners and much more. These include Grooveshark (I think free in most countries), Pandora (I think it is only accessible to people in the US), and Lastfm (free in select countries).

12) ZOTER0 - is a free, easy-to-use Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. It lives right where you do your work?in the web browser itself.

13) GOOGLE Grants - is a unique in-kind donation program awarding free AdWords advertising to select charitable organizations. We support organizations sharing our philosophy of community service to help the world in areas such as science and technology, education, global public health, the environment, youth advocacy, and the arts.

14) Dimdim.com - Free web conferencing that actually works well!

15) Evernote.com - allows users to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes everything accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere. Evernote can be used to capture ideas, snapshots, voice memos, and webpages. This is a very useful free application for keeping project notes, ideas, tasks synced across multiple computers and can be used on cellphones, computers (Mac and PC), etc.

16) ShareThis - is one of the best tools I have seen to date to provide a fairly comprehensive tool for democratizing sharing across social networks. The best part of share this is that site members or visitors can instantly share any page on the network via their own social networks. I think this is a wonderful tool (and free) to help increase the profile of networks and of course traffic.

17) Zamzar - is an online service that provides (the basic service is free) to help users transform songs, videos, images and documents into different formats.

18) Google Docs - A free service from Google that allows users to create, edit, store and share web-based documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Store documents online and access them from any computer.

19) DropBox - Allows users to sync files online and across computers automatically. Also has a sharing feature. Basic service is free.

20)?ASANA - A wonderful service? (that is free for up to 30 members)? that provides a web platform for collaborative projects.

There are many other sites out there. What are your top recommendations?

Starbucks to partner with Google and Level 3 Communications to upgrade Wi-Fi

SEATTLE (AP) ? Starbucks says it's reached a deal to partner with Google that will allow it to offer its customers dramatically faster Wi-Fi service.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Starting in August, new U.S. company-operated Starbucks stores will begin to receive up to 10 times faster network and Wi-Fi speeds. And over the next 18 months, Starbucks will convert more than 7,000 U.S. stores to the upgraded service.

Level 3 Communications, a telecommunications company, will upgrade existing Wi-Fi devices and manage connectivity in those stores.

Starbucks says the improvements will help ensure that its customers can easily access the internet.

Seattle-based Starbucks Corp. and Mountain View, Calif.-based Google Inc. also plan to work together to co-develop the next generation of Starbucks' digital network.

Level 3, a Broomfield, Colo. company, was originally Kiewit Diversified Group, founded in Omaha as a holding company for the nonconstruction assets of Peter Kiewit Sons? Inc. The firm moved to Colorado and shifted focus to telecommunications networks, changing its name in 1998 and going public, drawing heavy investment from Omaha residents.

Unique Activities and Games for Pets

It seems as though pet parents are always looking for a way to spend some quality bonding time with their beloved furry friends. These fun pet activities can help you and your pet build a growing relationship and bond together. I especially love some of the cat activities in this sponsored guest post. Please enjoy and let me know if you've ever done any of these things with your dog or cat in the comments section!?

---

Looking for something different to do with your pet? Is playing ?fetch? with your pooch getting old, or is your cat getting tired of chasing after a laser pointer? There are plenty of unique, out-of-the-box activities for you and your pet. Here are some fun and interesting games for pets, divided between dog activities and cat activities.

Dog Activities

  1. Dog disc ? This game of dog/owner flying disc is a challenging and fun activity for both of you. Discs come in a variety of sizes; choose a disc that works with your dog?s size, and make sure it is not too heavy or large for your pup. Do not let your pooch chew on the disc as a damaged disc could hurt your dog?s mouth when it catches the disc. If you and your dog are especially skilled at dog disc, consider entering a dog disc competition.
  2. Agility courses ? Agility courses are obstacle courses for dogs, but they require the dog?s owner to guide the dog through the course. It is a team activity for you and your dog. You can build your own or take your dog to a training center to be trained in a course. To keep your dog safe, make sure it is protected with a pet insurance policy.?
  3. Dog yoga ? This unique owner/pet activity is becoming increasingly popular. See if a local yoga studio or dog training center near you offers dog yoga, often called ?doga.? This doggie yoga allows you to help stretch your pup?s muscles as well as your own. Make sure to bring treats to reward and encourage good behavior at the class.

Cat Activities

  1. Create a playground ? A homemade playground is one of many fun games for pets, especially cats. Make a unique play area for your cat using household items; cardboard boxes and paper grocery bags are great options. Your cat will enjoy exploring the boxes and playing with the crinkly paper bags.?
  2. Download an iPad game ? There are now iPad games created just for cats. One game features a mouse that zooms across the screen. Your cat will try to chase or paw at the mouse on your iPad screen. This could provide hours of entertainment for both of you.
  3. Teach a cat tricks ? Contrary to popular belief, cats can do tricks, too. They can be trained to come, sit and stay. Training your cat may require a bit more patience than training a dog, but with the right motivation, it is possible. Treats work well as incentives because unlike dogs, cats do not inherently desire to please their owners, and extra motivation in the form of food helps.
  4. Play hockey. -?Ball up a piece of aluminum foil to create a lightweight ?hockey puck? for your cat to chase. Because the foil is light and crushable, your cat will be able to grab it easily (and you won?t have to worry about a heavy ball breaking something in your house). Tip: hard surface floors work best for this game as the foil puck will slide easily across them. After you and your feline are finished playing, make sure to dispose of the aluminum puck.

Whether you have a dog or cat, these activities and games for pets guarantee an interesting experience with your furry friend.? Try one or all of the games listed above and see which ones your pet enjoys the most. Before you drive to the yoga studio or dog training center, make sure you and your pet are protected with an insurance policy. From doing doga to building a kitty playground, you and your pet will explore exciting new games and most of all, have fun.Christina Miller loves to write, especially about business. Bloedel Reserve celebrates 25 years with a year of festivities ...

After 25 years of success, the Bloedel Reserve is hosting a series of anniversary celebrations.

Starting this August, the reserve will be opening a calendar of events to coincide with the nonprofit?s new master plan projects.

?We are incredibly excited to welcome Rose & the Nightingale to play at the Bloedel Reserve?s 25th Anniversary Concert,? said Ed Moydell, executive director of the reserve.

Following the reserve?s signature fundraising event, the sixth annual Garden Party on Aug. 1, the Rose & the Nightingale Anniversary Concert will kick off the anniversary party on the bluff from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9.

The concert will introduce an all-female group on the violin, cello, piano, trumpet and three-part harmonic vocals.

The Rose & the Nightingale visit the reserve just after releasing their debut album, ?Spirit of the Garden,? where they combine musical composition with garden-themed poetry written by American poets. The group?s music captures the magical inspiration of public gardens.

The reserve will continue the celebrations with a community picnic from 7 to

9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. also on the bluff. It?s a chance to bring the whole family, a blanket and enjoy an evening on the bluff with croquet, bocce ball and music. Beer and wine will also be available.

On Aug. 29, the reserve will feature a new installation of Julie Speidel sculptures. The installation will last until October and include 12 pieces placed throughout the landscape.

Speidel?s work creates a bridge between the onlooker and the landscape of the gardens so as to draw attention to overlooked points of natural beauty.

Shortly after Speidel?s installation comes to a close, the reserve will be hosting a Founder?s Weekend on Oct. 19-20.

The weekend will be an educational experience with lectures by past and present key players in the Bloedel Reserve?s 25 years of success as a public garden. The conversation will also cover future plans.

The following week, the reserve will team up with the West Sound Wildlife Shelter for the Spooky Creatures Walk from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

Shelter experts will be positioned all over the reserve grounds accompanied by feathery friends such as owls, hawks and crows. As visitors follow the many trails of the gardens, experts will introduce and show off a different creature.

The reserve will end the year with its fourth annual Holiday Village from Dec. 8 to Jan. 4.

A winter visit to the gardens is an experience for adults and children alike from its Christmas tree display to miniature villages and model trains.

The garden?s calendar of events this year will be a chance for visitors to hear more about proposals for the new master plan and to give input on improvements to the estate.

For more information on entry fees to any of the events, visit www.bloedelreserve.org/event-calendar/special-events.

Golf-Mahan baby present on way after Snedeker's Canadian win

OAKVILLE, Ontario, July 28 | Mon Jul 29, 2013 1:51am BST

OAKVILLE, Ontario, July 28 (Reuters) - Brandt Snedeker will use some of the $1 million purse from his Canadian Open win on Sunday to buy Hunter Mahan's new baby daughter Zoe a gift after his rival surrendered a shot at a big payday to return home for her birth.

"Zoe will be getting a very nice baby gift from me," said Snedeker after his three-shot victory at Glen Abbey Golf Club. "I can't thank Kandi (Mahan) enough for going into labor early, otherwise I don't know if I'd be sitting here if she hadn't.

"But that is a way more important thing than a golf tournament. I missed a golf tournament when my first was born and it was the best decision I ever made."

Snedeker, in fact, might well have thought it was his birthday with all the gifts he received at the Canadian Open.

After Mahan walked away from a two-shot lead on Saturday and cleared the way for Snedeker to take over top spot, Dustin Johnson, tied for the lead, triple-bogeyed the 17th on Sunday to gift the FedExCup champion a three-shot victory.

"I've been through this before when Kyle Stanley made a big number on the last hole and some people say he gave me the tournament," said Snedeker. "This is kind of right there with that.

"When Hunter was playing so great, he would have been tough to catch over the last two days but he's not here so there is no point in going down that road."

With his victory, the 32-year-old American joins Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar as the only players with multiple wins season. Since 2011, only Woods, with seven titles, has had more wins than Snedeker with five.

One of the game's best putters, Snedeker started the season as the PGA Tour's hottest player with a win, two runner-up finishes and a third place from five starts to race to the top of the FedExCup standings.

But following his victory at Pebble Beach in February, Snedeker put himself on the sidelines to rest his sore rib cage to be ready for the year's first major.

He missed five weeks and ever since has been working at returning to his dazzling early season form.

"It feels like two completely different years for me," said Snedeker. "First part of the year, I couldn't do anything wrong. I was playing fantastic, and I got injured.

"I feel like I've been fighting to get myself back to the way I was at the beginning of the year.

"I'm not saying I'm there but I'm close to the way I was playing in the beginning of the year.

"It feels great to get a win. To validate all the hard work I've put in over the past three months where I haven't played my best and know that I'm working on the right stuff and able to hold up under some pretty serious pressure this afternoon." (Editing by Peter Rutherford)

President Sata?s call to include Chiefs from Muchinga province in the House of Chiefs is unconstitutional-LAZ

Time Posted: July 28, 2013 3:08 pm

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has called for a corresponding amendment to the constitution if the three other chiefs from Muchinga province are to be allowed to be members of the House of Chiefs in the country.

This follows President Michael Sata?s call that Chiefs from Muchinga province who have not been gazetted to be part of the House of Chiefs? sittings, be brought to the House.

LAZ president James Banda noted that as much as his association is in support of the inclusion of Chiefs from Muchinga province to be part of the House of Chiefs, it would be unconstitutional do so now if the there are no corresponding amendments to the constitution.

Mr. Banda has affirmed that under the provision of the constitution, only 27 Chiefs are listed to be members and that as the constitution currently stands the three Chief from Muchinga province cannot validly take part in the House of Chiefs? sittings.

Mr. Banda was speaking to Qfm in an interview.

And The Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has called for a mutual and respectable relationship between President Michael Sata and Traditional leaders in the country.

This follows the recent threats that President Michael Sata made that Chief Jumbe of Mambwe District in Muchinga Province risks suffering the same fate as Henry Sosala who had his chieftaincy revoked as Chief Mwamba of the Bemba speaking people.

The threat came after Chief Jumbe criticized President Sata?s allowing Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people of Eastern Province, to make a statement at campaign rallying to drum up support for the PF candidate in the just ended Chipata Central by-election.

SACCORD Executive Director Boniface Chembe says there is need for a proper understanding of how the President and traditional leaders in the country work together as the traditional leaders in the country complement the work of the head of State.

Mr. Chembe has told Qfm in an interview that Chiefs also need to be mindful of how they take up partisan lines in public as such a trend does not appeal well to other Chiefs who are objective and who do not take up partisan lines in public.

Mr. Chembe has called on Chiefs in the country to also observe what is required of them when they are making public pronouncements.

Black lawyer group urges Florida governor to repeal 'Stand Your Ground'

By Kevin Gray

MIAMI BEACH, Florida (Reuters) - A leading group of black lawyers on Monday urged Florida's governor to call a special legislative session to repeal the state's "Stand Your Ground" law after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin.

"Stand Your Ground must fall," said John Page, the president of the National Bar Association, one of the oldest organizations of African-American lawyers, during the group's annual meeting in Miami Beach, Florida.

Civil rights groups have stepped up calls for Governor Rick Scott to ask state lawmakers to overhaul the law. Dozens of students this month staged a sit-in in Tallahassee, the state's capital, also urging him to repeal it.

But Scott has repeatedly said he supports Stand Your Ground and has no plans to call a special session. Recent polls show a majority of Floridians also back the law, which was first passed in 2005 with overwhelming support from Republicans and Democrats alike.

"I'm asking Governor Scott - convene a session," Page said. "We're asking you to act."

Dennis Baxley, a Florida state representative who sponsored the law, has also said he sees no need to overhaul it. He has argued the law has helped to lower crime rates in Florida.

Under Stand Your Ground, people fearing for their lives can use deadly force without having to retreat from a confrontation, even when it is possible.

Earlier this month, a jury acquitted Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer, of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the killing of Martin, a black 17 year old.

Critics contend that Zimmerman racially profiled Martin when he followed him in a gated community in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman said he acted in self-defense and shot Martin after the teenager punched him and smashed his head into a concrete sidewalk.

While Zimmerman did not invoke Stand Your Ground in his defense, one member of the jury has said there was a reference to the law in the jury instructions.

A second member of the jury has called for changes to Florida's self-defense law, which she said gave jurors no option but to acquit.

Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, appeared alongside Page on Monday. She said she believed the Stand Your Ground law contributed to Zimmerman's not guilty verdict.

"The thing about this law is I just think it assisted the person who killed my son to get away with murder," Fulton said. "We have to change these laws so that this doesn't happen to somebody else's child."

Pope celebrates Mass in Rio aimed at bishops

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Pope Francis is celebrating Mass in Rio de Janeiro's massive cathedral as he begins the culminating weekend of his first international trip, to the church's World Youth Day.

An estimated 1,000 bishops are celebrating the Mass along with Francis and his message is expected to echo what he has told young pilgrims all week: Go out of your churches to the peripheries and spread the faith to society's outcasts.

Francis faces a busy Saturday: After Mass, he goes to Rio's municipal theater to meet Brazilian politicians, businessmen, intellectuals and the diplomatic community. Afterward, he lunches with the country's bishops and then presides over an evening vigil on Copacabana beach that is expected to draw over 1 million young people.

He returns to Rome on Sunday after the final Mass.

Amanda Berry surprises Cleveland concert crowd

CLEVELAND (AP) ? One of three women held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade has appeared at a public event for the first time since her rescue, a day after her abductor pleaded guilty in the case.

Amanda Berry made a surprise appearance at the daylong concert RoverFest in Cleveland on Saturday night.

The 27-year-old Berry walked on stage with her family and waved at the cheering crowd. The rapper Nelly called Berry back to the stage after his music set.

Ariel Castro pleaded guilty Friday to imprisoning Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight and subjecting them to rapes and beating for a decade. The women disappeared between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 and 20. They escaped in May.

The plea deal will keep Castro imprisoned for life.
