2 sisters, 2 breast cancer journeys

Growing up in Sudbury, sisters Lori Ann Clements and Heather Hillier were very different.

?She had fair hair, I had dark hair, she wore blue, I wore pink,? Hillier said. ?She didn't like getting her hair done, I loved nothing more than poofy hair. I loved sparkly skating dresses, she loved plain skating dresses.?

Given how different she is from her older sister, Hillier said it's ironic that they were diagnosed with breast cancer ? albeit very different forms ? less than a year apart.

The sisters were the guest speakers at the 14th annual Luncheon of Hope Sept. 28. The annual event raises funds for breast cancer research funded by the Northern Cancer Foundation.

Cathy DiPietro, chair of the Luncheon of Hope committee, said most of those who come to the fundraiser have either been directly affected by breast cancer or know someone who has.

?There's so much research going on in the areas of treating breast cancer that it encourages us to volunteer and raise money so that we can provide the researchers with the funds needed to further their work.?

Clements, who now lives in southern Ontario, was the first of the sisters to be diagnosed.

In February 2009, she went for her first mammogram at the age of 50, and was diagnosed with an early-stage form of breast cancer known as stage zero ductal carcinoma in-situ.

Clements had two lumpectomies, but her doctors were not able to get clear margins around the cancer, and she opted to have a mastectomy.

?I was fortunate,? she said. ?That's how I approached my diagnosis and treatment, that I was one of the lucky ones. I just kept moving forward with that.?

Less than a year later, in January 2010, Hillier was also diagnosed with breast cancer. In her case, it was a much more aggressive form of the condition ? stage three invasive globular cancer.

It was at that point that Clements' then eight-year-old daughter, Olivia, asked her mother if she was going to get breast cancer one day.

?I could not say no,? Clements said.

?I said to her 'Olivia, they will watch you very closely.' That's my hope today, that research in the area of early detection continues, and improvements continue to be made in areas of detection and treatment.?

Hillier, who lives in Pittsburgh, said she had noticed a thickening in her breast more than a year before her diagnosis. She received a mammogram, but it came back negative.

It wasn't until an injury which caused her nipple to become inverted that she realized something was seriously wrong.

Two more mammograms and two sonograms also failed to turn anything up. It wasn't until Hillier had an MRI that she learned she had cancer.

?My husband and I walked out, and in the car I cried for about 30 seconds,? she said. ?It was only 30 seconds because I was already in attack mode. I immediately picked up the phone and started making phone calls.?

Hillier eventually ended up having a modified radical mastectomy, radiation, chemotherapy and plastic surgery to reconstruct her breasts.

While the last few years haven't been easy, she said she prefers to look at what her cancer treatment has given her ? the ability to celebrate her mother's 75th anniversary, her older daughter's first off-Broadway show and her younger daughter's university graduation.

?Most importantly, I get to see my husband's wonderful smile every morning when he brings me coffee in bed,? Hillier said.

This past June, the sisters celebrated their journey as cancer survivors and those who have helped them through their treatments with a party dubbed ?Boob-a-Palooza.?

?To look around at 100-plus friends and family was so heartwarming, and boy oh boy did they party,? Hillier said.

China develops a taste for wine

Number of the day

156 million

That's how many cases of wine were bought by Chinese consumers last year, making the country the world's fifth-largest wine market. As China's nouveau riche spend lavishly on wine, copycat French chateaus - as well as Mission-style Napa Valley knockoffs - are rising out of the countryside. Since China lacks a winemaking tradition, the emphasis is still on imports. But local wines are improving while boutiques are partnering with renowned French winemakers and winning awards.

There are about 150 of the San Diego-based company's ATMs across the United States. The machines use cameras, artificial intelligence and proprietary algorithms to assess the value of a phone and spit out a cash offer. The going rate for a slightly damaged iPhone 4 or 4S is about $175.

San Francisco's new environmentally friendly checkout bag law goes into effect Monday. Those who don't bring their own carriers on their next shopping trip should be prepared to reach for their wallets. The new ordinance requires that all retailers, with the exception of restaurants, bakeries and take-out joints, switch to paper or compostable bags from plastic bags and charge customers 10 cents for each bag they provide.

Product Launch Ideas

If you are betting your whole business on the new product you have coming out, than you?d better make sure you make a hell of a launch. A successful product launch is all about creating the right buzz, so that people are interested and excited about what you have to offer. It?s a very good idea to shroud the product in secrecy and just give out little hints once in a while before the launch, but you need to be confident enough that it will deliver in the end. If you manage to raise expectations very high, but your product fails to leave up to the expectations than you have a very big problem that could potentially mean the end of your business. In this article I will want to talk about some product launch ideas that might come in handy. I have seen many great products fail because of a very pour marketing campaign prior to the launch, as well as a huge number of mediocre products that have been pumped up with so much publicity that they had no choice other than to succeed. So, I believe that a list of some of the best product launch ideas might prove to be quite useful.

1.??? TV and radio. Remember that the traditional way of advertising is probably still the most effective so if you have the money and also a great idea for an ad, go for it, because TV and radio commercials still remain one of the most effective product launch ideas. If you have a limited amount of money than my personal choice is not to try and flood as many channels as you can from morning to the afternoon for as long as you can afford it, but instead go for one longer commercial at prime-time on as many channels as you can. All you have to do is make sure it?s spectacular, because if it is, it will get picked up at news or entertainment shows, and suddenly you will have free publicity.

2.??? Billboards and written press. Another conventional way to go about promoting a new product is through newspapers, magazines, and outdoor billboards. It can be a very effective way of promoting your product as long as you have an idea that will shock or stand out in the crowd through any means so that people will pay attention to it. It?s not one of the most innovative product launch ideas, but in the right conditions it may prove very effective.

3.??? Your own website. Remember that your website or blog needs to act as your home base so it needs to be spectacular. Any other kind of advertising you make online will lead visitors here, so make sure you hire a great graphic and web designer to take care of your site, because the benefits can be tremendous. Also make sure that the site is very user friendly by getting a second and third opinion form others during the design process.

4.??? Social media. With the constant growth of the importance of social media sites and applications you need to get your foot in the door in order to make sure you don?t miss out on a potential gold mine. Remember that words spread like wildfire on the internet so if you have a product presentation that can attract a few people on Facebook or other similar sites than in a few days this number will increase tenfold. Off all the product launch ideas that I will present in this article, this one is the most important to capitalize on.

5.??? Promotional products. Before the launch of a new product, a great way to create a buzz around it is to give away promotional products. Make sure you give out great quality samples so that people will start wondering that if you give out for free this good a product, imagine how good the ones that you can buy are.

6.??? Keep up the mystery. A good idea you can use before launching a product is to tell as little as possible about the actual product, and make people interested through all sorts of teaser commercials that don?t give away too much.

7.??? Think outside the box. Don?t just go for traditional means of advertising; try to come up with something different. One idea is to organize spontaneous flash mobs. Although they are rarely used for promoting products you can use this means to transmit an idea your product shares.

There are thousands of product launch ideas from which to choose from, and this selection I have made represents just my opinion on the steps you need to take to get a positive buzz around your product. If you have any other ideas, please, don?t hesitate to share them by posting a message in response to this article.

Body of former Turkish president to be taken from tomb

Herald Globe Saturday 29th September, 2012

? Former Turkish president could have been poisoned

? Order signed for exhumation of Turgut Ozal

? Family believes Ozal was murdered

Acting on the suspicions of his family who believe he was murdered, the body of late President Turgut Ozal of Turkey is set to be exhumed from his tomb at the request of Turkey's State Audit Board.

Ozal died on April 17, 1993 of a heart attack in his office in Ankara.

There have been doubts cast over the cause of his death with his widow claiming that her husband was assassinated by heavy metal poisoning.

The reasons for the autopsy include facts that his death was not investigated, no autopsy was performed and no evidence was collected at his home or office.

Also Ozal had no history of chronic or serious illness and died unexpectedly while still on the job.

An order for the exhumation has been forwarded it to the prosecutor's office in Istanbul, where Ozal's grave is located.

At the time of his death family members said they wanted no autopsy because of religious reasons.

Ozal's family has also expressed opposition to the exhumation because of religious concerns.

UPDATE 4-Spain debt rises on aid to banks, regions

Sat Sep 29, 2012 6:06pm BST

* Spain details cuts to health, education

* Debt-to-GDP ratio to rise to 90.5 percent by end-2013

* Budget deficit rises to 7.4 percent including bank aid

* Gross debt issuance rises to 207.2 billion euros in 2013

By Andr?s Gonz?lez

MADRID, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Spain's debt level and borrowing needs are set to rise next year, piling pressure on the government to apply for international aid, as it pours funds in to cash-strapped regions and an ailing banking system, its budget showed on Saturday.

Spain's debt as a ratio of gross domestic product will reach 90.5 percent by end 2013, according to the document presented to Parliament for approval, almost three times that registered before the property bubble burst in 2008.

The budget aims to make savings of around 13 billion euros ($16.72 billion) next year by cutting spending by the public ministries, education, health and infrastructure investments and freezing public workers' wages.

"This is an austerity budget, but will serve to help us get over this long economic crisis and once again show that Spain is a trustworthy partner within Europe," Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro told journalists after delivering the budget.

Spain is at the centre of the euro zone debt crisis as nervous investors demand ever higher premiums to hold Spanish debt on concerns the government cannot control its finances in the midst of a deepening recession.

Calls by wealthy northeastern region Catalonia for independence and the rising number of demonstrations on the streets of major cities have fuelled doubts Spain can fix its problems without help.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has delayed any plea for aid, which would kick-start a European Central Bank plan to buy debt and ease financing costs, though this week has passed reforms and the budget plan in what many see is an effort to pre-empt the likely terms of a bailout.

Rajoy, who said he is considering the conditions behind any aid request, is widely expected to wait until after regional elections in Galicia and the Basque Country before taking any decision.

RISING BORROWING NEEDS

The budget details spending cuts of 3.1 percent in health, 14.4 percent in education and 6.3 percent in unemployment benefits, as the recession, which began in the first quarter, drags on.

Spain will also slash state funding to commerce, tourism and small, and medium-sized companies by 18.8 percent and infrastructure by 13.5 percent.

The government will increase its reliance on international markets for funding next year, with gross debt issuance requirements of 207.2 billion euros after budgeting in 2012 for gross issuance of 186.1 billion euros.

The cost of financing its debt, as benchmark 10-year bond yields rise to above 6 percent, is expected to increase to 38.6 billion euros, or 3.6 percent of GDP, in 2013, the budget showed.

The Treasury must pay debt redemptions of 159.2 billion euros in 2013, up slightly from 153.2 billion euros in 2012.

The increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio was due to a greater debt on the back of the economic crisis and the effect of state instruments on public accounts, the Treasury said in the document.

The instruments include the power deficit bond programme, FADE, the service provider fund for regional governments, Spain's part in aid granted to Ireland, Greece and Portugal and the recapitalisation loan for the country's banks, it said.

Brussels on Thursday said the budget was a large step in the right direction. But many economists expressed doubt that Spain's conservatives would be able to raise the cash the budget demanded as pension and debt-servicing costs rise.

"My general view is that this is an optimistic budget, in the sense that predictions for the contraction in 2013 are very optimistic," said Xavier Vives, economist at business school IESE, adding that he expected the plans to be revised as with every other budget over the last four years.

The budget is based on the assumption that GDP will shrink by 0.5 percent in 2013 year on year, though most economists expect a deeper slump.

DEFICIT JUMP

Spain will meet its 2012 public deficit target as dictated by European guidelines, Montoro said, but the shortfall will jump by more than one percentage point if aid to its struggling banks were taken in to account.

The Spanish deficit this year would be 6.3 percent of GDP, not including these payments to its banks, he said, but would rise to 9.4 percent of GDP last year and 7.4 percent of GDP this year if the aid was considered.

"Everything within the deficit derived from financial operations aren't included ... they're considered one-offs," Montoro said.

Spain has asked for up to 100 billion euros for its crisis-hit banks, though the debate among Spain's European partners rages over whether that money would go directly to its lenders or first via public coffers.

On Friday, an independent report showed Spanish banks will need up to 59.3 billion euros in extra capital to ride out the economic downturn.

The budget details on Saturday showed Spain's debt ratio included 30 billion euros of the planned 100-billion-euro aid request for the country's banks.

More can mean less leptin Alzheimer | Health & Fitness Articles at ...

J. Wesson Ashford, MD, Ph.D. A major goal will be to determine whether treatment with leptin reduced the levels of a protein called tau, which is elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid of Alzheimer patients. Replacement therapy in leptin continued .High levels of the hormone leptin regulation of energy was associated with low rates of disease in a study published in TheJournal of the American Medical Association.

Leptin has been shown to reduce the levels of B-amyloid, the main constituent of the deposits, or plaques, that occur in the brain of people suffering from Alzheimer?s disease.

If our results are confirmed by others, leptin levels in older adults may serve as one of many possible biomarker for healthy aging and the brain, especially, may open new avenues in order to possible preventive and therapeutic interventions, write the researchers. Leptin replacement therapy

But Seshadri said it remains to be seen whether leptin replacement therapy would benefit humans with Alzheimer?s or help protect against disease.

He said the study reinforces the growing awareness that the health problems associated with procedures such as obesity and resistance increase the risk of dementia in old age.

Tau protein is a key that allows the transport along the fibers of the brain, he tells WebMD. If leptin decreases the levels of tau protein in cerebrospinal fluid, which tells us something is happening. So we only need 45 patients to demonstrate an effect.

Over 12 years of follow-up, those with lower levels of leptin were about four times more likely to develop Alzheimer?s than those with the highest levels.

Ashford is with the Center Stanford / VA Aging Clinical Research, Stanford, California

The treatment with leptin has been shown in studies on animals recent to improve the performance of the memory, even after the onset of Alzheimer?s disease, such as dementia.

Discovered in the mid-1990, leptin is produced by fat cells and is considered critical for the regulation and. But there is evidence suggesting a role more and more of the hormone in brain development and memory.

Higher concentrations at the beginning of leptin were associated with lower rates of dementia years later. This association was observed even after adjusting for the impact of quarantine abdominal or belly fat, which was recently identified as a risk factor for Alzheimer?s disease early.

The study initially included 785 elderly participants in the Framingham Heart Study in progress, which began enrolling patients in 1948.

The National Institutes of Health recently awarded nearly $ 3 million for a small pilot study of leptin replacement therapy in patients with Alzheimer?s disease.

?Our skeleton with its bones, joints and muscle connections serves us so well in our daily lives that we hardly pay attention to this great system,? said Dr. Elazar Zelzer Department of Molecular Genetics at the Weizmann Institute. ?While previous research has uncovered the mechanisms that contribute to the development and growth of each component of this complex organ and wonderfully adaptable, specific interactions between bones, muscles and tendons that drive the entire musculoskeletal system are not fully understood.

Our study raises a strong possibility that leptin may actually play a role in various pathological processes that cause Alzheimer?s disease clinic, the researcher Sudha Seshadri, MD, of Boston University School of Medicine, tells WebMD. The measurement of levels of leptin

If confirmed, the researchers say the findings could have important implications in the search for effective therapies to prevent and treat disease.

Psychology of Medicine: Obesity Epidemic: Smartphone Fitness ...

Need to sculpt your abs,?drop a few pounds?or run a marathon? There's an app for that.

On?iTunes?alone, there are more than 1,500 fitness software applications or "apps" from which to choose. In 2011, nearly 10 percent of cell phone users downloaded at least one of them to?help track or manage their health, according to a 2011 Pew Research Center Internet survey.

In an effort to find out if any of these smart phone and tablet apps are actually effective, researchers at Brigham Young University in Utah analyzed 127 popular downloads?and rated them for their ability to get users to change aspects of their lifestyles. Most apps fell short of this goal because, the researchers found, they weren't based on the sound?scientific theories proven to spur real behavioral change.

Lead author Sarah VanWagenen said the most common sin committed by a fitness app is lack of customization. "The majority don't ask for age, height, weight or any kind of?basic health information," she said. "You just sign up and they give you a program and some advice based on general recommendations."

Each app was scored based on features that promoted motivation, social networking, accountability and behavior tracking. According to VanWagenen, these are the tried and?true features of any high quality behavior change program. The highest scoring app the team looked at was the hypnotherapy aid?Sport and Fitness Excellence. It received a 28?out of a possible 100 points. The average score was 10 and more than a third of the apps received scores in the single digits.

Clearly there is room for improvement, VanWagenen said.

Part of the problem may be a disconnect between app developers and the social scientists who study behavior change. At this point, most developers are gamers or social media?developers. Very few have backgrounds in public health or psychology.

Not that developers are against learning some lessons from traditional behavioral change models designed in labs. It's just that the world of app development moves so quickly.?According to Brian Wang, the co-founder of the firm that markets the social networking app?Fitocracy, there aren't the time or resources to review the literature or consult?research experts.

"Based on my past ten years of experience, the common thread to success is a sense of community and strong social bonds. Without fail it works. We didn't need a controlled?study to tell us that," he said.

Wang claimed that nearly 20 percent of Fitocracy members are active users and that about five percent are "super users" whose log-on time adds up to several hours per day. "Users are?treating us like Facebook. It's where they come to stay in contact with likeminded people and all that support really makes a difference to them," he said.

VanWagenen doesn't necessarily disagree with that assessment, but said that social engagement is only one tool for successful behavior modification. For example, an app like Fitocracy may?be appealing for someone who has already made the decision to make changes, but it may not be a draw for those who are still undecided about starting a program. On the other hand, a?popular app like the diet diary?MyFitnessPal?may attract people who like the focus on counting calories but may ultimately lose a lot of users due to lack of social support.

VanWagenen does say that apps have been getting better as time goes on. Though the Brigham Young study was just published, the apps her team reviewed were offered by the iTunes app?store in 2009. It takes time to do a study and get it published. Many of today's most popular apps weren't yet available.

And, VanWagenen said, many developers are stumbling into some good use of theory whether they know it or not. For instance, sites like Fitocracy plan to up their game in the near future by?placing a lot more value on user feedback. Their long term plans include "crowd sourcing," techno-speak for pooling and analyzing aggregated data so they can spot trends and report them?back to their users. They could mine the data from say, Fitocracy members who lose the most weight over a six-month period, and then use that information to lay out a diet and exercise?blueprint for new users with the same goal.

Sites like Fitocracy use social engagement to help people get fit.

(AP) ? Paris fashion has no boundaries and no borders.

Thursday's cultural melting pot of spring-summer 2013 shows was proof enough.

Curious designers, thirsty for new inspiration, ventured across the globe to bring new ideas and exotic cultures back to the catwalk.

Manish Arora traveled to northwestern India's Rajasthan to bring Paris a vibrant infusion of traditional Indian dress and lavish regal jewelry.

Balmain's creative nomad Olivier Rousteing, meanwhile, replaced last season's muse ? the Russian Empire's Faberge Egg ? to travel to the artisanal wicker-weavers of Cuba to give his in-vogue summer black collection a unique panache.

Barbara Bui, who also channeled black, joined the expedition with geometric American Indian prints and tribal-looking dresses and foulards.

Taking another tack, Nina Ricci, forever a romantic Parisian gamine, traveled decades back in time to produce a nostalgic show with a modern twist.

Friday's collections include Roland Mouret and Issey Miyake, as well as the debut ready-to-wear show for new Christian Dior designer Raf Simons.

BALMAIN

To welcome in next spring, some designers in Paris have said it with flowers. Balmain said it with wicker.

Never one to travel with the crowd, 27-year-old designer Olivier Rousteing used artisanal Cuban wicker-weaving as a vehicle for his signature graphic silhouettes.

Rousteing ? who on Thursday completed a full year at the helm of the iconic French fashion house ? possesses a roving eye for cultural artifacts. Strong shouldered, highly structured looks came with cropped tops, lashings of jewel and slices of torso at his Paris Fashion Week show.

Yet the high point was the wicker-embellished cropped jackets that growled like a fierce, feminine exoskeleton.

Rousteing's 3-D woven straw evoked a baroque mood, a feeling that was echoed by lavish diamond checkerboard patterns ? a replica of the polished marble flooring of the Versailles Palace.

No doubt Rousteing will pass his annual job review.

MANISH ARORA

India ? home to over a billion people and one of the most colorful cultures in the world ? is a limitless creative touchstone for designers. So it's surprising that Mumbai-born Manish Arora ? perhaps the subcontinent's most famous designer ? has not delved into its rich fashion encyclopedia before.

That is until now.

Arora presented a spicy and bohemian homage to his homeland for spring-summer 2013 at Paris Fashion Week.

But why now?

"Luckily, this year I was very attracted toward jewelry: Is there a better place to draw inspiration?" said Arora, dressed in a flamboyant gold top.

Arora took us by the bejeweled hand down a goldmine of revamped traditional Indian dress. Angrakha dresses with orange patterns were set of boldly with a shiny chainmail pant, alongside geometric prints of tigers, panthers and antelope.

However, the show was really about the jewelry, as sublime ornamentation reigned in some of the collection's more garish looks. At one point there were gasps as the Maharaja's daughter came down the catwalk: Resplendent in a standout gold face-band that circled the bottom of the eyes.

NINA RICCI

There's been nostalgia in the air at Nina Ricci of late.

This was certainly the case in Peter Copping's deceptively complex spring-summer 2013 show at Paris Fashion Week, which floated ethereally by and matched the vintage feeling of last season's show.

Perhaps the mood was set by the millions of falling cherry blossoms ? which mark the end of spring ? that opened the presentation.

Or perhaps it was the floaty chiffon tops, the gentle pleated skirts, the halter necks, the flowing fringing or the soft silhouettes that harked to bygone days of the 20's and 30's.

Although the show opened with black designs, it melted like winter into spring, shifting into dusty colors of silver gray, blush pink, red and pale lavender.

Touches like zippers kept it modern for an accomplished, commanding show ? the most feminine display so far this season in Paris.

But Copping needn't be feeling nostalgic himself ? this collection shows he has a bright future with the fashion house.

BARBARA BUI

"Black is back for summer," declared Barbara Bui, following her saleable, and typically feminine collection for spring-summer 2013.

The French-Vietnamese designer opened the show true to her word, with a series of sexy-looking black nappa ensembles.

Bui, known to have an eye on her youthful clientele, ticked the on-trend box with her gentle masculine tailored-jackets, which led the eye down provocatively to skintight pants or inches of leg.

Singing the spirit of spring's first bloom, Bui then let float by a diaphanous series of sheer organza blouses.

Fluttering layers and contrasting pockets endowed the cornflower blue and flesh colored looks an interesting textural play.

Unfortunately, the message of harmony got lost by the end ? diluted by a confusing series of geometric American Indian patterns with conflicting silhouettes.

Daily Fitness For Health: Ryan Reynolds: Buried with Fitness Phobia

One of fitness.com's most fit celebrities that we just can't get enough of, has to be Ryan Reynolds.? So, what can we not help but bring you?? More information on this hot muscle ...

Lately you could find Ryan?Reynolds.....or could you? Reynolds just finished filming one of the greatest suspense movies he has ever played a role in, where he spent the majority of the time cooped up in a wooden coffin. The film is called "Buried", and the story is about a man (played by Reynolds) who is a United States truck driver in Iraq, that gets himself trapped in a coffin. All he has access to in the outside world while being trapped in the coffin is a cell phone and a lighter.

Reynolds says the role took an incredible toll on him both physically, and emotionally. He says it was an experience unlike no other. It really brought the reality of war to him, and he said that for him "the scars and things, are just spoils of war." After spending 17 hours in the coffin, Reynolds may have come out of the box with a lot of bruises, scrapes, and even a little bald patch; but Reynolds calls his physical injuries from the film making "souvenirs."

As for his mental health, which may have suffered more than his physical; he found it hard to get back into the normal routine of every day life without feeling the jitters. Since being stuck for 17 days straight while filming, Reynolds claims that he had more anxiety and sense of panic than he had ever felt before, and had a lot of trouble sleeping at night throughout the duration of the film.

However, since the making of the film, Reynolds has tried to find peace again at home after a failed attempt to vacation on a beach. He said the sand was just a reminder of the box he had been in while filming (which was full of sand), so he found himself on the next flight home.

HIV AIDS Treatment and Prevention programs | ArticlePDQ.com

(HIV/AIDS) is a disease of the human immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The symptoms of HIV and AIDS vary, depending on the phase of infection. As the virus continues to multiply and destroy immune cells, you may develop mild infections or chronic symptoms HIV is transmitted primarily via unprotected sexual intercourse (including anal and even oral sex), contaminated blood transfusions and hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. Some bodily fluids, such as saliva and tears, do not transmit HIV. Prevention of HIV infection, primarily through safe sex and needle-exchange programs, is a key strategy to control the spread of the disease People are diagnosed with AIDS when they have certain signs or symptoms. iPhone 5 swings through first round of Chinese approvals, may already have China Telecom onboard

iPhone 5 swings through first round of Chinese approvals, may have un

Wireless device certifications can sometimes give away a little more of a company's game plan than intended. Case in point: a China Compulsory Certification for the iPhone 5. The expected A1429 variant has been given initial clearance on its way to China Unicom, but there's also a previously unseen, CDMA2000-based A1442 iPhone with a similar rubber stamp. With the iPhone 4S already on the market for a CDMA-only China Telecom, it doesn't take much to suggest that the A1442 represents Apple's taller, faster smartphone already prepared for the same carrier. Neither edition of the iPhone 5 is imminent without the equally important network and radio clearances. Getting the ball rolling on multiple variants so soon after the initial launch, however, raises the chance that we'll see the iPhone 5 on more than one Chinese provider faster than the iPhone 4S took to arrive the last time around.

Homeschool: Letter to Adult Self Journal Prompt - IdeasforWomen.com

This month?s?journal?prompt if you are following along is to have your child write a letter to themselves as adults at a particular age (either you select the age or have your child choose an age.) They can include anything they want such as a funny story, things they currently like to do,hopes or dreams of what they will be like at that particular age.

The letter doesn?t need to be more than a page long and great idea would be to keep the letter or do as we do and write one each year. We choose an age that is 20 years older than the children?s current ages and include a snapshot of each child at their current ages on the letters. ?I take and add them to each notebook so that I can give them to each of the children when they reach the age that first started with.

Later once they are adults these letters will be great birthday presents filled with memories, hopes, and dreams of the past. The letters also allow your children a chance to see how their writing skills and styles change with each year. I don?t have them read these aloud as we do other journal entries because these tend to be more personal.

Asian stocks sink as global economy fears rise

HONG KONG (AP) ? Asian stocks mostly drifted lower Monday as investors' growing concerns about the shaky global economy overpowered any remaining optimism over central bank stimulus efforts.

Crude oil tumbled while the dollar rose against the euro but fell against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index dropped 0.4 percent to 9,070.78 and Seoul's Kospi index shed 0.2 percent to 1,999.18. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down less than 0.1 percent to 20,724.17 while Sydney's ASX S&P 200 fell 0.4 percent to 4,388.60. Benchmarks in Singapore and Indonesia also fell.

Strategists at Credit Agricole CIB wrote in a research note that the "euphoria emanating" from recent moves by the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan to stimulate growth is "fading quickly."

"The reality of weak growth and underlying structural tensions is coming back to haunt markets."

The Fed vowed in mid-September to buy billions in mortgage securities each month until the economy improves in a third round of what is known as quantitative easing, or QE3. The ECB and Bank of Japan followed with their own renewed bond-buying plans.

"There is this struggle between optimism towards QE3 and the concern about the global economic slowdown," said Louis Wong, a director at Phillip Securities in Hong Kong. "So investors are weighing the easing measures of central banks and the health of the global economy."

China's Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.3 percent to 2,032.44, reversing losses earlier in the day. However, the benchmark is still at its lowest point since January 2009.

Chinese stocks are being hurt by a dispute between China and Japan over disputed islands that has heightened tensions between Asia's two biggest economies.

They're also under pressure as investors worry about what Chinese authorities will do to restart growth amid the country's economic slowdown. Wong said it's unlikely that Chinese authorities will unveil any major stimulus measures ahead of the National Day holiday next week or an expected but still unscheduled Communist Party meeting to hand over power to a next generation of leaders.

"This inaction by the Chinese government also weighs," Wong said.

Asian markets were also reacting to some downbeat economic reports released over the weekend. The U.S. Labor Department said that the unemployment rate rose in more than half of states last month, the latest evidence that hiring remains tepid across the world's biggest economy. The World Trade Organization, meanwhile, cut estimates for global trade growth for this year and next. Both reports came out on Friday after Asian markets closed.

In Tokyo, camera maker Canon Inc. slid 3.5 percent and global automaker Honda Motor Co. dropped 2 percent. Australian mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. lost 2 percent. Petrochina, China's biggest oil and gas company, fell 1.6 percent.

On Wall Street Friday, markets were little changed. The Dow lost 0.1 percent to close at 13,579.47 while the broader Standard & Poor's 500 fell a minuscule 0.01 percent to 1,460.15. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.1 percent, to 3,179.96.

In currencies, the euro weakened to $1.2947 from $1.2989 in late trading Friday while the dollar fell to 78.07 Japanese yen from 78.15 yen.

U.S. benchmark crude for October delivery was down 82 cents to $92.08 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 47 cents to settle at $92.89 on Friday.
